Many people think that their cooling unit can keep their home at cool 60°F, no matter the temperature outside. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Most HVAC systems are designed for the climate/weather that they are in. For example, in Arizona, you will see ducts & cooling units designed for heat above 100°F, here in Western Washington though most AC systems are designed for lower temperatures 80-90°F, with a large focus on heating a home, rather than cooling it.

Running your cooling unit lower than it is intended, will likely not produce the temperature desired and, can result in:

• Icing over which can lead to flooding
• System shut down
• Reduction of life of the syetm

For these reasons, it’s important to follow these tips when your area reaches higher the normal temperatures:

• Try setting your thermostat to 74°-78°F keeping your system warmer than normal reduces stress on the system and keeps your energy cost down.

• Ensure the thermostat is set to cool and fans are set on.

• Don’t cool what you don’t use. Close doors in unused rooms, but leave the vents open.

• Keep windows and doors closed and blinds shut.

• Keep the garage door closed.

• Reduce heat-generating activities such as cooking, baking, dishes, or laundry.

• Use fans to direct cold air around the house.
