With each change of season here at BelRed, we like to send along some helpful (and seasonally relevant) plumbing tips through our blog to help our customers and readers get the most out of their home plumbing system. We understand the importance of keeping plumbing fixtures, faucets, pipes and more in top shape.

Below you’ll find the first of two parts of a convenient a relatively quick Spring plumbing checklist. For help with any of these items, or anything related to your home plumbing needs, don’t hesitate to contact BelRed so we can put you in touch with one of our knowledgeable, expert plumbers. Enjoy!

  • Check the temperature on your water heater. It should be set to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent scalding and burns. For normal household needs, this temperature should certainly be sufficient for the Spring season (and beyond).
  • Test your sump pump to ensure it’s working properly. Drop a few buckets full of water into the drain area. The pump should quickly turn on and get rid of the excess water. Remember – Spring tends to be a very wet season. You don’t want water issues in your basement!
  • Clean your gutters. Cleaning gutters can greatly reduce the chance for water problems such as basement or roof leaks. Gutters are there for a purpose – taking the time to do this now can save some potentially big headaches.
  • Check all faucets for dripping or leaks. Sealing or tightening fixtures can help save a lot of water.
  • Test all toilets for proper flushing. If they seem to be running excessively after flushing, you may need new tank parts. No need to worry – these are inexpensive parts that can greatly reduce your water usage and can often be installed very quickly.
