Believe it or not, the New Year is just around the corner. It’s that time when we all make lists of resolutions to better our lives and the lives of those around us.

At BelRed, we believe in helping to improve the lives of our customers and their loved ones when it comes to home energy and performance. In this blog series, we’ve put together a list of resolutions for your new year that could help do just that.

Follow this checklist and you’ll be well on your way to a more energy efficient home in 2016 and beyond!

  • Get in the habit of using and adjusting your programmable thermostat. One of the best ways to save energy is to know the best temperature settings for your home and programmable thermostat. Striking that balance between comfort and high energy consumption can help save hundreds of dollars per year on your heating bills. The best part? It takes just a few quick minutes to adjust the settings and set an automatic schedule for your week. Remember, even if you have an older thermostat, we can help you set up a programmer that works seamlessly with almost any heating system.
  • Switch to energy saving light bulbs. Replacing your lighting throughout the home is a great way to save a ton of energy in the new year. While it may be a bit more costly up front, the switch will definitely pay for itself over time. The amount of energy you save will also increase dramatically with a change in light. Making the switch to any Energy Star rated bulbs is the way to go. You could save almost $100 per year in energy savings just by changing your light bulbs.
  • Schedule a heating system cleaning and maintenance check. Maintaining and cleaning your heating system, furnace or otherwise, can cut down greatly on how hard the system has to work in order to keep you comfortable during the winter. This is typically a very inexpensive way to keep your system working in top condition. Trained professionals can quickly and easily perform maintenance checks and clean your heating system, which will also reduce the risk of much larger problems down the road.
  • Change your furnace filter. Another hugely important item to add to part 1 of our New Year resolutions list is changing your air filters. If you haven’t done so recently, this is especially important. Your heating system is just starting to enter its busiest time of the year, so easy airflow through the filter is more important than ever. The good news? It’s probably the easiest home performance maintenance task to perform. The hard part is remembering to do so!

As always, we’re here to help well beyond developing a list of energy saving tips for you to tackle in the new year. We’d love to help with any home performance upgrade or project, whether it’s on this list or not! Give us a call today to schedule an appointment. We hope you have a fantastic New Year!
